ELEVATION GAIN: Just over 700 meters LENGTH: 6 km round trip On Sunday, a group of us headed up Prairie Mountain. Its a great shoulder season hike that has a clearly marked trail, and often less snow (but is still icy!) then other hikes further into the mountains. The trail head starts at the Elbow Falls Day Use area, directly north of the Hwy. 66. There are a few trails that skirt up the first steep section but they all lead to the main trail. Though the hike is relatively short (6 km round trip), its steep (elevation gain of just over 700m). We started the hike with some blue sky peeking through, and by the top, were engulfed in a snowy blizzard. The top of the hike is marked by a Canadian Flag. Though we didn't get to enjoy the views of the Rockies to the west, or Calgary to the east, it was a fun hike that I will definitely be trying again in the summer. Hopefully on a clear sunny day! Some sections of the trail were quite icy so spikes and hiking poles are recommended if you plan on going in the winter or spring. The total hike took us approx. 4 hours with a short break at the top.
